A sudden gust of wind
“Have you ever found yourself trapped in a loop of thought?”
Hello, this is Geum Joo Eun.
This happened to me recently during a short walk near my home. The familiar walking path was thickly overgrown with trees on both sides. As I walked slowly along the path, my thoughts that day weren’t about the nice weather or feeling lighthearted. Instead, they were fixated on an unpleasant incident with a colleague from another department at my previous company. When I asked a question, instead of simply saying, “I don’t know, I’ll have to check / or you might need to find out on your own,” they replied, “How am I supposed to know that?” I felt instantly unpleasant, but I let it go.
However, if I had just let it go that day, if I had simply forgotten, it would have been so much better… Why can’t people do that?
With the thought, “Why did I let it go that day? Wasn’t that tone like, ‘It’s obvious I wouldn’t know that, isn’t it?’” the situation kept replaying in my mind.
It felt like I hadn’t even pressed the play button myself, but my mind was stuck in a continuous loop. As I walked halfway down the path, pondering thoughts that felt neither initiated by me nor by anyone else, a sudden gust of wind whistled past. It was as if it blew only in that spot. My hair was disheveled, and the sudden wind made me squint my eyes slightly.
Gathering my thoughts and looking around, I had an “aha!” moment. I realized that something in my head had been going terribly wrong. I looked at the surrounding trees. The flowers and the butterflies visiting them finally came into view. To be recalling such a trivial matter from long ago, ignoring this beautiful, pristine scenery, felt like a mockery of time and this very space.
I apologized to the trees. “Ah, I was only thinking about that. I’m sorry. At this moment, it would be much better to imagine myself succeeding, or ideas for writing overflowing. It would be much better to enjoy looking at you, wouldn’t it?”
Wind often symbolizes a ‘shift in consciousness’ or ‘the power to clear the flow of thoughts.’ And the fact that the wind blew “at that very moment, in that very spot” felt like my unconscious intervened, amplifying this symbolism for me.
And my recalling that unpleasant memory also had meaning. It was a trace of unresolved emotion, a desire to protect the boundary I wanted to maintain as an individual. However, at that moment, through the wind, my unconscious delivered a message of ‘ventilation’ and ‘realization’: ‘Yes, you felt that emotion, and you acknowledged it. But now, it’s time to put that down and nurture the seeds of your own heart.’
I was truly grateful to realize the will to recognize my own emotions and transform them in a positive direction, through a natural phenomenon like the wind.

The Repeating Loop of Thought
As I walked back along the path towards my office, had that unpleasant memory completely vanished, and was my heart filled with joy? After walking a bit further, I found myself heading back home. I returned to the spot where I had met the wind, but I was so caught up in that unpleasant thought again that I even forgot I had briefly encountered the wind there. A few meters past that spot, I was surprised by the imagination I was indulging in, and I looked back.
The imagination I had was of me sharply pointing out the mistake of the person who made me uncomfortable, and that person realizing their error and apologizing to me – a kind of ‘vindication’ fantasy.
‘Ah, that was the spot… I was thinking useless thoughts again.’
This clearly meant that strong, unresolved emotions remained within me. The scenario of ‘sharply addressing and receiving an apology’ was an unfinished drama in my inner world. In fact, in such cases, the ‘vindication scene’ in one’s imagination is not mere vanity or anger, but a human and natural desire for fairness, for being recognized/respected. So, there was no need to deliberately suppress it. Rather, through such imagination, my mind was, in its own way, undergoing therapy.
And my self-reproach, calling it ‘useless thought,’ was not entirely negative either. It was a reflection indicating a strong desire to spend my time more productively and positively.
Most importantly, what truly mattered on the return walk was that this time, the wind did not bring me the realization; I consciously became aware of it. In terms of sequence, it could be represented like this:
Unconscious → Consciousness
External Stimulus → Internal Insight
I hope to continue developing this power to awaken even without the wind. Then I could say, “At first, I needed the wind, but now, I can create the wind within myself!” I enjoy imagining that.
The Unconscious: A Vast Reservoir Holding Both ‘Duality’
The unconscious is like a vast reservoir containing all thoughts, emotions, memories, desires, and fears that are not consciously perceived. Both my ‘unresolved emotions’ and ‘yearning for justice’ (negative or unresolved aspects) and my ‘imagination of success,’ ‘imagination of ideas overflowing’ (positive and powerful aspirations and goals) exist together within it.
These two aspects will influence my actions and thoughts on different levels.
Unresolved Emotions/Desires: These sometimes drain my energy and create negative thought loops, just as I recalled the unpleasant encounter with that person. The unconscious sends these to consciousness as signals for me to confront and resolve them. Positive Aspirations/Goals: These provide me with motivation and powerful momentum to move towards my dreams.
The unconscious can boost a person’s potential through positive imagery. Since the unconscious manages all of this holistically, we must consciously choose which messages to focus on and which energies to cultivate, by paying closer attention to our inner voice.
Reference
You might be curious about the symbolism of “wind,” so I’ve added this. ‘Wind’ frequently appears as a common symbol not only in dream analysis and symbolic interpretation but also across mythology, religion, psychology, and art.
- Symbolism in Jungian Psychology Carl Jung often interpreted natural phenomena (fire, water, wind, earth, etc.) as metaphors for consciousness and the unconscious. Wind has no form but clear movement and is sensorily felt. Therefore, it is often interpreted as an invisible change, a shift in consciousness, or a revelation. Example: The experience of a shift in perception at the moment the wind blows is a typical symbolic pattern.
- Wind in Mythology and Religion In the Bible, wind is often equated with the ‘Holy Spirit.’ There are expressions of the Holy Spirit descending like wind. In Eastern philosophy (especially Taoist thought), wind is interpreted as the flow of ‘qi’ (氣), an energy that brings about changes in mind and body. In Buddhism, feeling the wind during meditation is seen as a symbol of the mind becoming calm and open to subtle changes.
- Wind in Literature and Art As seen in phrases like “The wind is blowing, one must live” (Le vent se lève, il faut tenter de vivre, Valéry), wind often symbolizes a ‘moment of decision,’ ’emotional ventilation,’ or ‘awakening after loss.’ My experience of suddenly feeling the wind during a walk and having an “aha!” moment can be seen as a metaphor (an metaphorical device) that promotes a cognitive shift in reality.
