[The Reason You Can't Change Your Saju (Four Pillars of Destiny) But Can Change Your Unmyeong (Fate): The Power of Change and Choice]

🏛️First Pillar: Saju and the Power of Choice (English Version)
Title Recommendation: 2026: Two Keys to Mastering Your Destiny and the Power of Choice
Content:
What should I write about? I’ve spent a long time contemplating this. Unconsciousness? Psychology? Saju? Spirituality? Inner self? Meditation? Because I am deeply interested in all these topics, the options felt overwhelming and confusing.
As you can see from the title, I’ve decided to make “Saju” the theme of my very first post. So, I chose Saju as our starting point.
I began my studies of Saju back in 2018. The journey (?) of finding my mentor is mentioned in my e-book, A 5-Minute Oasis for Commuters. Since it was a long and winding road to finally meet them, it is an incredibly precious connection to me. Now, I would like to talk about Saju and the concept of change, as promised in today’s title.
2026: Two Keys to Deciding Your Fortune The year 2026 has just begun. I want to share two vital ways to actively attract good fortune into your life.
The Power of ‘Choice’ Over Life Did you check your New Year’s fortune earlier this year? Did they say the year of the Wood Snake (Eulsa-nyeon) would bring you great relationships or wealth?
In my early days of studying Saju, I often read the fortunes of my friends. Back then, most of them would say, “I can’t just let you do this for free!” and would send me gift icons or treat me to a wonderful meal. I was truly grateful to have friends with such beautiful hearts.
There were two reasons why I initially didn’t want to accept any monetary compensation. First, I was still a novice (though I’ve learned that longevity in study doesn’t always guarantee higher accuracy), and second, I felt awkward taking money from friends. However, those friends made the ‘Choice’ to give me what is known as ‘Bok-chae’ (a consultation fee). And I made the ‘Choice’ to accept their gesture.
As the saying goes, “Life is C (Choice) between B (Birth) and D (Death),” even in this small episode, multiple choices were made. Choice might very well be the essence of life itself. Good fortune is not determined by the advice of fortune tellers or mentors, but by the ‘Choices’ made by the individual themselves.
Saju, Fate (Pal-ja), and the Truth of ‘Change’ You may have heard the saying, “You can’t change your Saju, but you can change your Pal-ja (Fate).” Those who study Saju often tilt their heads at this, because Saju is Pal-ja, and Pal-ja is Saju. To us, it’s puzzling how such a distinction was ever made.
Let me briefly explain the concept: Saju is arranged from right to left in the order of Year, Month, Day, and Hour.

The pillar on the far right represents the Year (Year Pillar), followed by the Month (Month Pillar), the Day (Day Pillar), and the Hour (Hour Pillar). These four pillars—’Ju’ (柱)—combined with the eight characters that appear within them, form what we call ‘Saju-Pal-ja’ (Four Pillars and Eight Characters). (Note: This excludes the hidden heavenly stems, or Jijangan.)
Then, why do people say, “You can’t change your Saju, but you can change your Pal-ja”? To me, this phrase represents a fascinating harmony between two conflicting ideas: the fatalistic view of Saju and divination, and the powerful human will to change anything. It is quite an intriguing expression, considering that Saju is Pal-ja, and Pal-ja is Saju.
‘Change’ and ‘Choice’ that Transform Destiny
There are three laws in the universal truth, and the very first is ‘Change.’ If destiny were set in stone, there would be no need for change, and we wouldn’t even strive for it; this would completely contradict that universal law. However, Saju-Myeongni is a discipline centered on ‘Change’ and is a branch of Yeok-hak (the study of changes). In other words, Saju itself is the study of change. The existence of change is the clearest evidence that destiny is not predetermined.
In the transformation of Saju, ‘Fortune’ (Un) plays a key role. That is why we consult Saju every year to look into the fortune of that specific year. If we break it down further, there are monthly fortunes, daily fortunes, and even hourly fortunes. Faced with these countless waves of fortune, we reach that moment of ‘Choice’ (C) between Birth (B) and Death (D). Whether it’s the relatively gradual timing of monthly and daily fortunes, or the much tighter timing of hourly fortunes, we must make choices, large and small.
Here is the conclusion I want to share: Ultimately, the core method of attracting good fortune is simply making ‘Good Choices.’
What is a “Good Choice”? Helping Yourself and Having a Heart of “Boshi”
Then, what exactly is a “good choice”? It is by no means an easy question. However, the sages of the past have given us a clear hint.
- A Choice to Help Yourself: As the saying goes, “Heaven helps those who help themselves.” When you make choices to help yourself, hands of support appear from your surroundings, and new paths begin to open.
- The Heart of “Boshi” (Generosity): In Buddhism, Boshi (Dana) means giving out of a compassionate heart without expecting anything in return. It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture like donating your entire fortune. Sharing the knowledge you possess, investing your time to help someone, or offering a single warm word—all of these constitute Boshi. Boshi is a good choice for both yourself and others, and such choices ultimately attract good fortune.
The point to be cautious of here is that we must not confuse “choices for oneself and others” with choices driven by personal “greed” or “desire.” It is precisely at this point that people’s hearts are easily led astray.
For example, a few years ago, there was a “book-writing craze.” While most charged reasonable tuition, some classes cost an amount beyond imagination. The instructors of such classes captured people’s hearts by emphasizing “exerting a positive influence.” It sounded wonderful. They would say, “Brand yourself to make money quickly, become an instructor, and exert a positive influence for others!” To earn money while helping others sounded like a win-win for everyone.
At first glance, it seems like a good choice for both oneself and others. However, what actually stimulated many students was their own “desire”—such as “making money” or “fame”—rather than “positive influence.” One of the key techniques in increasing sales is touching the consumer’s “desire.” Once that desire button is pressed, consumers are ready to open their wallets. Ultimately, the regret belonged to those who made choices led by the wrong intentions.
The Mesh of Choice: Freedom to Paint One’s Destiny
Fortune always enters when we have to choose something. The Great Fortune (Dae-un), Yearly Fortune, Monthly Fortune, Daily Fortune, and Hourly Fortune rotate endlessly like mathematical formulas every day, month, and year. And we meet that fortune. What we must remember is that life doesn’t change drastically simply by being led by fortune. This is because the grand framework of Saju does not distinguish between good and evil.
For instance, a boxer both gets hit and lands punches. If I can do something to others, I can also be affected by others. Therefore, depending on what choices we make on the countless crossroads spread out like a net, a different result will unfold before our eyes. Based on the results of that choice, new “mesh lines” (Geumul-maek) will appear in various directions, and we will stand at a crossroad once again.
Choice is akin to the work of leaving “traces of the heart” upon these paths spread out like mesh lines. If I began walking by choosing desire, fortune will unfold various mesh lines of desire once again. If I chose a path for both myself and others, fortune will unfold various mesh lines of a similar nature as a result, allowing me to choose again.
Saju is determined at birth. Up to this point, one might feel the aura of destiny, but humans cannot even fathom how vast that framework is. The question of which direction to choose within that giant framework, encountering countless crossroads, leads to “Freedom.” It is the freedom of choice. Even if we cannot choose the situation, the reason we can at least choose the direction in which our heart flows is that these mesh lines are created infinitely.
At which crossroad are you standing right now? And among those mesh lines stretching out in thousands of directions, how will you use your freedom to make a choice? I am truly curious.
